Keep Heating and Cooling Costs Low

Keep Heating and Cooling Costs Low

If you told people only about ten years ago that a barrel of crude oil would be priced as high as $150US, and that the cost of gasoline for cars would be routinely higher than $4 in the U.S., people would have thought you were crazy. This has become the case, however, and this reality means that people are trying to cut back on energy costs in all aspects of their lives. Trying to keep costs low for heating and cooling a house are no exception to this rule.

Surprisingly many households don’t think about closing doors and shutting vents in rooms of the house that get little or no use. It just takes a small amount of effort, and nobody would argue that it makes no sense to heat or cool a room that is empty all the time. If visitors do arrive and the room is needed again, just open the door and open the vents. Doing so is a very simple operation that probably takes less than one minute.

It is certainly a good idea to inquire with your energy companies about how to have an energy audit taken at your house. Some utilities do this themselves, or it might be a local hardware store that can have it done for you. They would hope to sell you the needed materials to fix the problems that are pointed out in the energy audit.

It is necessary for the air filters for both the furnace and air conditioner in your home to be as clean as possible, so make sure that they are cleaned or replaced as necessary every month or so during the season. Certainly you will want your family to breathe clean air, and this is not possible with a dirty or clogged filter. You also want the heating or cooling unit to work with maximum efficiency, and it cannot if the filter is blocking the proper air flow.

Every home should be equipped with a programmable thermostat to control the temperature of the house at intelligent levels. There is no need for the house to be as warm in the middle of the night in winter as it is during the day when family members are at home. The initial investment is not large and this will be paid for in a matter of months due to less energy usage overall.
